Eight Community Providers Welcomed by OMC Board of Commissioners

August 20, 2009 - At tonight’s Board of Commissioners meeting, Olympic Medical Center formally welcomed seven recently recruited community providers, as well as Dr. Bob Watkins, a local orthopaedic surgeon who has come out of retirement to provide services in his new Sequim Clinic.

“Olympic Medical Center has been in full recruiting mode this past year in an effort to secure providers in a number of needed areas, including OB/Gyn, orthopaedic surgery and for hospital-based services,” says Scott Kennedy, chief medical officer, Olympic Medical. “We continue to actively recruit for primary care physicians and other specialists based on community needs.”

Orthopaedic Surgery in Sequim

Dr. Bob Watkins, an orthopaedic surgeon who has provided services to our community for many years, most recently in an on-call capacity, is coming out of his second retirement to serve the Sequim community, as well as see patients in Port Angeles. Surgeries will continue to be performed out of Olympic Medical Center’s state-of-the-art surgical suites. He is part of the Olympic Medical Physicians Orthopaedic Clinic group, which includes Dr. Dirk Gouge and Dr. Loren Larson.

“Dr. Watkins continuously shows his devotion to our community and we are very pleased to have him back on medical staff serving orthopaedic patients,” says Dr. Kennedy.

New Jamestown OB/Gyn

Dr. Cynthia Brooke, obstetrician and gynecologist, joined Jamestown Family Medicine in Sequim this spring. Olympic Medical Center provided financial support to help Jamestown recruit this needed service.

Obstetric Pain Management

Miriam Talley, certified registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) joined Olympic Medical Center this spring. The addition of Loren Krause, CRNA, this September, will complete the expansion of the obstetric pain management program – a program designed to provide 24-hour pain management (epidurals) to laboring obstetric patients at Olympic Medical Center’s birth center.

Hospital-based Services

Three hospitalists have been added to the Olympic Hospitalist Physicians group, headed up by Dr. Ed Gacek. Married couple Dr. Eric Swanson and Dr. Jennifer Swanson joined the hospitalist group in July. Dr. Wade Austin joined in spring. Hospitalists provide around-the-clock inpatient care for patients admitted to the hospital. Hospitalists communicate with the primary physicians, while handling much of a patient’s care in the hospital. Hospitalists are very familiar with the hospital and its various functions and provide 24-hour physician coverage for patients during their hospital stay.

Dr. Gregory Harrah joined Peninsula Emergency Services, Olympic Medical Center’s emergency medicine physician group, this spring. He joins five other emergency physicians in providing 24-hour services in the emergency department.

Olympic Medical Center is a comprehensive health care provider for more than 70,000 residents of Clallam County. It provides inpatient services at its 126-bed acute care facility, and outpatient services, including cancer care, cardiac services, imaging, surgical services, rehabilitation therapy, laboratory and home health at locations throughout the Olympic Peninsula region.
