Five OMC Employees Recognized in August

August 7, 2014 -

PORT ANGELES – Olympic Medical Center’s board of commissioners and Chief Executive Officer Eric Lewis recognized five employees at the August 6 board meeting in the hospital’s Linkletter Hall.

Lewis praised employees Kim Bedinger, OMP Specialty Clinic, Anna Hansen and Steve Holm, clinical informatics and applications, Cindy Runnion, physical therapy and rehabilitation, and JoAnne Ross, Home Health, for their outstanding efforts – much of it behind the scenes.

"Taking care of patients is the heart of what we do, but we cannot do that without employees working in the background, making things go,” says Lewis. "These employees support patients, physicians and staff, and their work allows us to operate efficiently and cost effectively.”

Kim Bedinger, Medical Assistant – OMP Specialty Clinic - Sequim

Medical Assistant Kim Bedinger received recognition for her patient-centered efforts, including leading process improvements focusing on patient care coordination such as obtaining referrals, scheduling appointments, and obtaining preauthorizations. Holly Wickersham, operations manager, Olympic Medical Physicians says: "Kim works hard to meet both the providers’ and patients’ needs in a timely and efficient manner. She understands the importance of the smallest detail when it comes to physician orders or patient follow-up care. She is our go-to person for new employee training on discharge planning and recalls and has shared her knowledge and expertise with staff from other clinics in an effort to standardize practices throughout OMP.”

Anna Hansen and Steve Holm, Database Analysts – Clinical Informatics and Applications

Known as the "dynamic duo,” Hansen and Holm work tirelessly to maintain the diverse databases and interfaces found throughout Olympic Medical’s system, and ensure they function smoothly. They offered invaluable service as key members of the Lawson implementation team – including ongoing work to stabilize and continuously improve Lawson. They also provided oversight of the Meditech data conversion and third-party interfacing during the implementation of the Epic electronic health record system. Both participate as leading members of the Epic report team, and both step up in emergencies and provide coverage for critical application needs.

"Anna and Steve do a tremendous service for OMC as they work day in and day out ensuring our data systems work the way they should,” says Lewis. "Our data systems are complicated and we appreciate their expertise and willingness to work throughout the organization to create positive results.”

Cindy Runnion, Lead Customer Service Assistant – Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

Lewis recognized Runnion for her departmental improvement work, and for exceeding expectations in making an unexpected project a reality. According to Gloria Andrus, physical therapy and rehabilitation manager, Runnion played an instrumental role in setting up an ordering and inventory process in the department known in lean process improvement as a "5S” system. The work resulted in cost savings to the department and decreased unnecessary purchases. "Developing this process displayed diligence and determination to make things work efficiently and effectively,” says Andrus.

Andrus also noted Runnion’s efforts in ensuring the closure of the physical therapy clinic at the Downtown Health Clinic in Port Angeles went smoothly. "What really set her apart was the work she did for our department with closing the downtown clinic,” says Andrus. "I truly believe we would have never made our timeline without her taking ownership of this project.”

Joanne Ross, Home Health Biller – Olympic Medical Home Health

In less than a year, Ross has rapidly learned the many aspects of her biller position, which includes billing Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurers, and monitoring payments and accounts – which can be approximately 400 to 500 accounts at any given time. Joan Warren, director, Olympic Medical Home Health says: "Joanne’s organization and dedication are phenomenal. She has done a fantastic job getting bills out, developing processes for monitoring accounts, following up on unpaid claims and getting our accounts receivable days in home health down into the 40s.”
